Digi Women in Tech: Liesl Talmarkes

LIESL IS A SENIOR QA AT DIGIOUTSOURCE, WITH A PENCHANT FOR PUSHING BOUNDARIES TO SEEK BETTER SOLUTIONS. WE CHATTED TO LIESL ABOUT HER ALMOST 5-YEAR JOURNEY AT DIGI.

What inspired you to pursue a career in the tech space?

I didn’t grow up with computers nor was it something I was taught at school, however, once I got a computer after completing my schooling I thought, ‘now this is really cool!’. A whole new world opened up.

Talk me through your journey at Digi.

I haven’t moved from the QA space since joining DigiOutsource in 2015, I love this space so much. At DigiOutsource we create our own technology to build a solution that suits our needs. Here I can break things - I can test a developer’s knowledge, push the boundaries, question and challenge them to find a better way of doing things.

What do you think women bring to the technical domain?

From my experience working at other companies, it sometimes happens that a woman’s opinion can be overlooked without her having previously proven herself to her male counterparts. Women generally have to work harder to be seen in this space, however, at Digi I don’t feel any prejudice.

What is your most valued aspect about being a Digi Woman in Tech?

As a Digi Woman, it’s super cool working here. I really appreciate that I am listened to and I like that I bring a different vibe that is welcomed and respected. It’s empowering to feel that you can speak out and be included irrespective of gender.

Do you have any advice to encourage women looking to join the tech space?

If you are curious and adaptable, you are likely to do well in the tech space. It’s really hard to get bored with so much to learn in the different areas that you are able to pursue within the industry, even more so at Digi Outsource.
