What were you doing prior to starting with us?
I was studying towards a degree in International Relations in London, and was also volunteering my time in a local domestic violence charity, where I was helping with fundraising, research, social media, and event organising. Before my degree level studies I had studied visual arts, media, and technical drawing. I worked in hospitality and retail in Finland, UK, and New Zealand, and I travelled quite a bit.
How did you come to start working at DigiOutsource?
After I graduated in December 2016, I was looking for something different, a totally new experience. I found a job advert online for Finnish speakers to work in customer service in Cape Town, and I applied for the job.
Tell us about your Digi journey.
I started in the Digi-International office in London in April 2017, and in November I made the move to South Africa. It was quite a process to get all my documents together as I had to get things from different countries, but fortunately DigiOutsource assisted with the visa process. I didn’t quite know how to prepare for the move to SA as I had never been here before, but figured that things would fall into place once I got here – and they did.
I started as a Finnish-speaking Customer Service Host, and in August 2018 was promoted to work as a Finnish translator in the Translations team. I currently work as one of the two Finnish in-house translators. My work involves translating bulk communications like emails and SMSs, campaigns, website content etc. into Finnish.
Our team is very international and unique as we have people from all around the world like Japan, Argentina, Germany, Sweden etc. We are surrounded by different languages and accents all the time. I have also found my team to be almost exceptionally friendly, welcoming and helpful in all situations – although Digi is full of people like this. This is a fun role as you get to deal with various other departments and learn more about them and what they do.
Tell us about your favourite part of DigiLife.
I love the various perks Digi offers such as the annual flight benefit, free meals, free gym, free massages and so on. If I ever was to leave SA or DigiOutsource it would be very hard to find another employer that takes such good care of their employees. The people here are awesome too, and they make work more fun every day. The growth opportunities are good, but I haven’t fully utilised the opportunities yet. The office itself is very nice, I currently sit with a view of Table Mountain which is pretty cool. Last but not least, I like that things change at Digi very quickly and there’s always something new to look forward to.
